Chapter Sixteen

“How can that be? Taryn didn’t even know who she was until a few weeks ago. Those thugs were sent up here before that.” Alric was mad, too. Good.

Siabiane looked like she was afraid I was going to break apart. “I think Lorcan is right. You may not have known who you were, Taryn, but someone in the southern continent did.”

I was still sitting, but I doubted that I had the energy to jump to my feet—I would have liked to, though. “Qianru? She knew a lot more than I thought, but not enough to realize that Jovan and Glorinal were homicidal maniacs. Are you saying she knew what I was?” That was impossible to believe.

Lorcan shook his head, but there was a brief pause before he spoke. “I doubt it. I would say not at all, but she is more resourceful than any of us knew. But I seriously doubt it. If she knew what you were, she never would have gone south without you in tow. She isn’t a mage, but she works as the advisor for the Emperor Fian, the largest empire in the southern continent. Bringing back a living Ancient would have been her biggest coup.”

“Could she be trying to do that now?” Padraig looked thoughtful. “Perhaps she found something that made her realize what Taryn is and is using this spell to get her to come to her?”

I watched them and pondered my own interactions with Qianru. She was pushy, imperious, and sneaky about not sharing information. I just didn’t think she was evil. “This sounds weird, but I don’t think she’s up to anything evil. I think if she knew what I was, she would have been up here herself, not sent hired flunkies. And I really think she was terrified in whatever that message was. I wish I’d seen all of it—but she was really rattled. Trust me, it takes a lot to do that.”

Siabiane nodded, but it seemed like it was more to herself. “I know it’s late, but if Welsy and Delsy are done with their patrols, I’d like to have them come in and tell us what they found. I would have asked them at dinner, but they get edgy if they can’t do their patrols. We should go back to the front room.”

Alric started to reach forward to help me up, then stepped back. “Maybe I shouldn’t be near her?”

“Might be a good idea until we get a better handle on the spell attacking her.” Padraig stepped forward and helped me up. I felt a slight twinge, but not like from Alric.

“Yup, I forgot you helped with teaching me a few spells too. Not a lot, so I only felt it slightly.” I looked back to Lorcan and Siabiane behind us. “I hope you can solve this spell issue and give me back my magic. I think I need to go pummel somebody.”

“I think we should be able to find a way to modify the effects at least. I need to find out more about the Robukian.
